[25.05.27] ![]() Iowa Future Foundation to Improve Urban Environment as Part of Seoul International Garden Expo Agreement Planted more than 3,000 trees to provide a green shelter for citizens in a carbon-reducing urban environment Total of 24,000 trees planted in seven urban forests nationwide, including restoration of mountain fire damage The Iowa Future Foundation (Chairman Lee Hoon-kyu), together with the Mercedes-Benz Social Contribution Committee (Chairman Matthias Weitl), created the ‘Green Plus Urban Forest’ in Boramae Park, Seoul, and unveiled it to the public at the ‘2025 Seoul International Garden Expo’, which opened on May 22nd. The urban forest is part of the ‘Seoul International Garden Expo Garden Creation Business Agreement’ that ICHF signed with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Mercedes-Benz Foundation for Social Contribution in 2024. A total of 3127 tree species, including flowering ginkgo, gogwang, and crape myrtles, were planted in the urban forest, which covers an area of approximately 1,200 square meters, and has become a green space in the city center that can help alleviate the city's heat island effect and reduce carbon emissions. This is the seventh achievement of the Green Plus Urban Forest Project, which is part of the Mercedes-Benz Foundation's social contribution program with the Mercedes-Benz Committee for Social Responsibility that began in 2022. The foundation has previously created urban forests in various parts of Seoul, including Cheonwang Neighborhood Park in Guro, Seoripul Urban Nature Park Trails, and Ttukseom Han River Park, Each forest has been positively received by local residents as a place to relax in harmony with nature. The opening ceremony was attended by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Chairman of the Mercedes-Benz Committee for Social Contribution Matthias Weidl, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and Lee Hoon-kyu, Chairman of the Iowa Future Foundation. “The creation of this urban forest is not just environmental beautification, but a practical activity that improves the quality of life of citizens and passes on a healthy environment to future generations,” said Lee Hoon-gyu, Chairman of the Iowa Future Foundation. “We will continue to develop various climate action programs with the Mercedes-Benz Foundation for Social Contribution to achieve sustainable carbon neutrality.” In addition to the creation of urban forests, the Green Plus Project continues its efforts to respond to the climate crisis by restoring wildfire damage and creating firebreak forests. More than 10,000 trees were planted to recover from the devastating forest fires on the east coast in 2022 and the Gyeongsangbuk-do region in 2025, and a total of 24,000 trees have been planted nationwide since the launch of Green Plus, contributing to carbon reduction and ecosystem restoration. Meanwhile, the Children and Future Foundation, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, is a welfare foundation specializing in children, adolescents, and young adults that conducts various social contribution projects in close partnership with sponsoring companies. The foundation will continue to work with companies and local governments to expand green spaces in urban centers and create an environment where citizens can experience nature in their daily lives. |
